Meet Rachael Stanmore, one of our Teachers at our recently opened primary school in Liverpool, Cavendish View School, as she takes us through her experiences with supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities (S.E.N.D.) and how she’s looking forward to achieving outstanding things with her new students.

“Six years ago, I began working as a Teaching Assistant supporting children and young people with a range of SEND. I loved having the opportunity to form such meaningful relationships but I craved more responsibility, so I made the decision to train as a primary school teacher with a specialism in SEND. I have been teaching in SEND schools for three years now, with the majority of my pupils having a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder. My professional experiences will be applied to my role at Cavendish View School as I’ll be implementing a range of strategies to overcome barriers to learning for our children, making our school somewhere where they can feel safe. I am passionate about using Makaton signs to aid communication and I hope to establish a signing choir here at Cavendish View!

In my classroom, one size does NOT fit all. Each child has their own interests and needs, which I will meet through planning engaging lessons that centre on things that they enjoy. I will be flexible by adapting activities and providing additional resources, to help children want to learn and to believe that they are capable of achieving great things.

At Cavendish View, teachers and teaching assistants work hand in hand with our Mental Health and Wellbeing Team to deliver a holistic approach to educating our children. We have placed ourselves at the heart of our community and are passionate about forming links with local organisations, to both provide opportunities for our children and to give something back to our city. I look forward to working in partnership with our Mental Health and Wellbeing Team to deliver interventions in class to support our children.

I am so proud to be a teacher at Cavendish View School. We are a friendly, welcoming team surrounded by state-of-the-art facilities and I am confident that we are going to achieve outstanding things for our children!”
