At Salutem Care and Education, we love to celebrate the incredible dedication and creativity of our colleagues — and Support Worker Matthew Kavanagh from New Road Supported Living in Peterborough is a shining example of just that.
When Matthew Robinson, an individual we support, found out he wouldn’t be able to re-enrol on his college cookery course this year to allow others a chance to join, the news came as a huge disappointment. Cooking is one of his greatest passions, and his weekly sessions had become a real source of joy and confidence.
Not wanting to see Matthew miss out on something that means so much to him, Support Worker Matthew Kavanagh decided to step in. Drawing on his previous experience as a chef at another Salutem service, Kanner House in Plymouth, he offered to host weekly cooking sessions right at New Road.
Each week, the pair plan a recipe together, shop for ingredients, and bring their dishes to life — from hearty meals to creative new bakes. The sessions have quickly become a highlight of the week, giving Matthew the chance to continue building his skills and independence while doing what he loves most.
“Matthew really lights up when he’s cooking,” said Kavanagh. “It’s wonderful to see how proud he is of what he makes each week. I’m just glad I could help him keep doing something that means so much to him.”
Since joining the team, Kavanagh’s enthusiasm, compassion, and creativity have made a lasting impact — and it’s no surprise he’s now taken on the role of Matthew Robinson’s keyworker.
John Godden, Chief Executive of Salutem Care and Education, said:
“This is a wonderful example of the person-centred support we strive for at Salutem. Matthew showed real initiative and kindness in making sure someone could continue to enjoy their passion. It’s about recognising what makes each person happy and fulfilled — and making that possible.”
