Trauma is a wide range of traumatic, abuse or neglectful event or series of events that are experienced as being emotionally or physically harmful or even life threatening. How these impact on the child/young person depends not only how this experience of the event is felt, but also how it negatively impacts upon children/young people’s emotion, social spiritual and physical wellbeing. Every child/young person is affected by trauma in different ways.

In summary, psychological trauma can be understood by the term of 3 E’s:

Event, Experience and Effect

By being ‘trauma informed’ our staff teams will be able to recognise when children and young people may be affected by trauma and adjust the support provided/way they work to aid in the recovery building recognition and resilience.

South East

Within the South East area, we have multiple provisions for children’s residential care. Our homes provide care for children and young people aged 6-18. These provisions deliver a trauma-informed approach to our children working closely with the staff teams to provide a safe, homely, and nurturing environment where the young people are supported to build resilience as they create a life they choose to live and resume self-control and responsibility for their behaviour. We welcome young people who have encountered a traumatic experience, have behavioural or mental health difficulties and/or have experienced or are at risk of sexual exploitation. We provide a holistic and nurturing home dynamic, which will offer our young people access to therapy and able to provide a space for home-schooling when needed. We create positive opportunities, so our young people feel happy, safe and healthy.

We have a solo provision for young people aged 6-18 who may need extra support and guidance due to social behaviour and emotional difficulties, learning disabilities or mental health difficulties, which either makes it very difficult to, or they choose not to, live within in shared accommodation at this time. This provision offers support for all young people who have encountered a traumatic experience, have behavioural or mental health difficulties and/or have experienced or are at risk of sexual exploitation. Admissions are planned with a longer transition, (placements will be for a minimum of 3 months and be able to offer both short & long-term placement), but the home will always ensure that the needs of the young person to be placed, can be met.

“The staff build positive relationships with children. Children have enjoyed the activities that they have chosen. Giving children the opportunity to take part in events that they have chosen helps them to build their identity.”

Our newly established supported accommodation service seeks to use the active support approach to assist young adults in gaining the skills of independence with guidance and support from staff who will enable individual growth and personal development. All individuals supported will have a named key support worker. The service is provided for up to 4 people age 16+, but predominantly 16–17-year care leavers. It is designed to be an independence assistance programme to assist individuals who are leaving care to develop the skills to achieve independence from school to work or study and stable long-term accommodation. The service offers supported accommodation, that is accommodation with support, to develop skills of independence and transitioning from care to self-sufficiency with goals set by the individual.

”The home environment is homely and welcoming. Children’s photos are proudly displayed on the walls. They depict happy memories and experiences shared with staff. Children’s bedrooms are personalised to their tastes and are redecorated between children moving out and new children moving in. This gives children the opportunity to make the space their own and take pride in their home.”
